Love aaj kal (2009) : The beauty of a simple love story

Love, rather a complex emotion that every human being on this god's green earth craves and searches for in the various romantic relationships that they have throughout their life in hopes of finding that one person, who will be their soulmate and with whom they would spend rest of their life with. Depending upon when I finish this blog and when you guys will read this blog, it was valentine's a few days ago (i am late) and since I had no date for this valentine's I thought why not watch a favourite movie of mine by myself......alone *sad forever alone music playing in the background*. So I watched love Aaj Kal from 2009 and I wanna talk about it. So in this blog, I am going to tell you guys why love Aaj Kal is one of my favourite love stories of all time and compare it with love Aaj Kal 2020 because why not? so let's do it.
Part 1: Why Love Aaj Kal is still so good?
Now for anyone who has seen the original love Aaj Kal they already know that for today's standards Love Aaj Kal is nothing new, it does not add anything to the romance genre but for 2009 it was a very unique film. For the time the concept of telling 2 parallel stories just in a different time was new and fresh but if you take these stories individually and analyze them they are your simple and generic love stories with the same clichés but you know what? that is not a bad thing far from it in fact when told together both the stories elevate each other and make the movie overall better and besides every once in a while we all need that simple movie that we can just sit back and watch and feel good inside.

The simplicity of love Aaj Kal is also backed up by great and feel good movements which are the actual source of greatness for this movie along with great music that every Imtiaz Ali movie has (my favourite song being Ajj Din Chadheya) and great performances by Saif Ali Khan as both Veer and Jai and Deepika Padukone as Meera.

Just to give you an example here is a description of in my opinion the best scene from the movie, this scene takes place in veer's storyline in the year of 1990 after the veer's true love Harleen has shifted in Kolkata and at the time since there were no Phones or anything he had no ways of contacting her so he was used to missing her badly. So one day he decides to just gather some money and go to Kolkata just to see her. When he reaches Kolkata and somehow gets the address of Harleen place, he goes near her place with a gift and waits for her to come to her balcony and when she comes to her balcony, after seeing each other after a year both of their eyes light up. Harleen comes down and since she cannot directly talk to veer at the time that was considered a taboo, she brings kava(a type of black tea) for him because she knows that veer likes drinking kava and she leaves kava near veer and accepts veer's gift and goes back to her balcony and opes the gift while veer watches happily, enjoying the kava which Harleen left for him. After this when veer goes back to Delhi there was a big smile on his face throughout journey just because of this small interaction between him and Harleen after a year of waiting for her and throughout the scene, a beautiful song Ajj Din Chadheya by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was playing in the background that makes this scene even more beautiful. This scene is so wholesome and beautiful that it puts a dumb big smile on my face whenever I watch it And this is just one of many examples of great moments from this movie that makes it a good movie.

Part 2: Love Aaj Kal 2009 vs Love Aaj Kal 2020
Now despite the bad reviews that love Aaj Kal 2020 has being getting I watched love Aaj Kal 2020 last Sunday and surprise I didn't like it mainly because I was comparing it with the original movie and I felt like the sequel of the original film wasn't even necessary to do because if you think about it you can only do so much with a concept like this. The new love Aaj Kal didn't do anything thing new and at parts, it was worse than the original, it was more dramatic than the original which is saying a lot because original love Aaj Kal was also a little dramatic and yes the scene where Sara Ali khan says "Tum Mujhe bohut satane lage ho" is as cringy and unbearable to witness in movie as it was in the trailer. But credits, where credit does the movie, had some good moments, not as much as the original love Aaj Kal did but there were some sweet moments and the music was very good just like Imtiaz Ali does but even this cannot make the movie any better. In the end, love Aaj Kal 2020 became yet another forgettable Bollywood movie which is such a shame considering the original love Aaj Kal is literally a classic.

Part 3: Conclusion
Love Aaj Kal 2009 even after 10 years has hold up surprisingly well and even to this date with its sweet melodious music, great characters and simple yet effective love story with some really sweet moments can make us smile and go along with lives of Jai and Meera to see what lies ahead for then in this story of two ordinary people who fall in love with each other and in the end come together and live happily ever after.

So that's it for this blog hope you liked it and if you did subscribe for more blog and also follow me on Instagram @tarun_chhabria and all the other social media garbage and I will see you next time
