Imagine a giant and dark pit of sad emptiness that doesn't seem to have any end to it. It's just a dark void and if you throw anything in it that thing just disappears into nothingness and that is how depression feels like and more than 256 million have it around the world. So nowadays many TV series and movies cover this topic and try to answer the of how do we deal with it. One of the TV series that covered this topic and can't possibly be good for my mental health but I watched it anyway is Bojack horseman, so let's see how this handles this topic specifically through one of its characters Diane Nguyen *SPOILER AHEAD*.
Now if you are still here even after that spoiler, why the heck are you here go and watch the show it's good 9/10 highly recommended but if you are here just to know what can you do personally to deal with your depression (note that I am not a therapist if your condition is really serious stop reading my dumb article and go see a therapist) here is a summary:-
The Bojack Horseman is an animated Netflix original series and it just finished its last season i.e season 6. It takes place in a world where animals can talk and walk like humans and they live beside the human. our Story follows Bojack horseman who is a horse and in the '90s had a famous TV shows named horsin' around but after that show ended, he was left miserable without any new show or movie to star in and he falls into alcoholism. Then he decides to write a book himself to revive his career so he hires Diane Nguyen (a human) to write his book for him and it is here the story starts but the show goes deeper than this and have various other stories about the Bojack's life but that's not the point of this blog. This show also has 3 other main characters namely Princess Carolyn (A pink cat), Mr. peanutbutter (A dog) and Todd Chavez (A human) and another thing that this show has is animal puns... lots and lots of animal puns which you can never really go wrong with. Don't let the colorful art style and animation and constant jokes fool you this show deals with some really heavy subjects like depression, drugs, alcoholism, suicide, and much more dark stuff and people say cartoons are for kids. Now with that long intro out of the way LETS TALK DEPRESSION !!.
The way this show handles depression is I think was pretty realistic and honest and it does this with the help of 2 characters Bojack himself and Diane. The reason Diane is the subject of this blog and not Bojack is that his condition is very complex and I cannot explain it in only one go and another reason is that I just relate to Diane more then Bojack so here we are. At the beginning of the show, Diane seems like this smart, independent woman who doesn't take shit from anybody but as the show and we take a deeper look at her past and her mind we get to know that she has so many problems. she had a god awful parents and brothers and even after she moves out of his parent's house to go and live in L.A, mostly everything in her life seems to go wrong, she gets married to Mr. peanutbutter but ended up getting divorced soon after. professional goes good for a while but the company she worked at is sold to money-hungry cooperation so she quits that job. Her self loathing and doubt made her depressed. Personally for episode 10 of season 6 named "Good damage" was one of the trippy and hard and somehow a feel-good episode for watch because in this episode we were basically looking into the mind of a depressed person and her feeling of worthlessness and the thought of being broken and undeserving of love just hits me so hard. But by the end of that episode, she realized that this doesn't have to be this way now how she reached that conclusion because its a long story but I felt good for her and luckily by the end of the series she was in a much better place. She wrote her first book, she falls in love with a loving and caring man named guy (i never said that they are clever with there naming) and she starts taking medication for her mental health, overall she was happy by the end.
Here comes the most important part of this blog, what have I learned after studying the character of Diane Nguyen? How do we deal with our negative thoughts and mental issues? here is how
1) Acceptance:-
The most crucial step towards getting out of your misery is to accept that there is a problem and it doesn't need to be that way. If you know that there is a problem then only you can fix it otherwise you will continue to be sad and not know why are you sad.
2) Know that you are not alone:-
There are always people in our lives who really love us and would love to help us in the need to hold on to those people and reach out to them for help. It doesn't matter who they are maybe they are your parents, your best friend, your boyfriend, your girlfriend just tell them what you are suffering through. Often if our emotions don't have an outlet then they come out in destructive ways so be more open to these people and if needed take professional help there is nothing wrong with that. If we go to a doctor when we are sick physically then why can't we do that if we are sick mentally. Take any help you need and don't isolate yourself that is the worst thing you can do when you have mental issues.
3)Get rid of toxic people:-
This point is pretty much self-explanatory being around with dumb, ignorant, negative people who always put you down is not even worth it so get rid of those people and if this person is someone you see on daily basis and avoid them, then keep the interaction to the minimum. Instead surround yourself with smart, loving, positive people who will lift you up and make you feel happy. After all, you are an average of 5 people you surround yourself with.
4)Occupy your time with the things you love:-
Have you ever noticed that when you do something you love like playing cricket, video games or any other hobby the time just pass super fast and the only thing we think of is that hobby? Do it more often especially if its something creative like drawing or writing stories it will help you to get your mind off all the bad things that are in your mind.
So that's it for my first blog. As I am new at this please comment down and tell me the things I should improve and if you liked blog post share it with your friends and subscribe to my blog I will try to post a blog on once a week. Thanks for reading this blog have a nice day bye!!
